And will not God give justice to His elect, who cry to Him day and night? Will He delay long over them? I tell you, He will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth? (Luke 18:7-8)~~ There is no shortage of examples of hard times that people are going through today. The level of ‘struggle’ that we face is enough to make people want to just throw up their hands and walk away. Our own mindsets nowadays is that it’s not even worth the effort! Why even continue on? Why even try in the first place? Not only do we feel this way about our own lives, but we’re passing it on to others around us and even to the generations behind us…yes, our children are being fed a mindset that it’s best to just let ‘whatever’ happen because we have nothing to pursue in life that will be worth the effort anyway. It’s a wonder that there is any level of faith on earth!
Our experiences in life have a way of challenging our faith! Have you ever let go when you’ve had a struggle? Have you ever felt you were taking the right course of action, only to hear someone suggest otherwise, and so you gave up? How often do you pray but you feel like your prayer is going unanswered or even denied? You thought God would hear you and for sure would listen to you but you started feeling like your faith…maybe wasn’t enough. There comes a time when we all need to be confronted with the fact that we don’t know God as well as we may think. God has a way of putting us in our place lest our preconceived ideas and our small way of thinking keep us from seeing Him when He comes. Looking back at history reveals that God turns up in different ways. Looking back at Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and Elijah— Not one of them could have the luxury of seeing God as He had appeared in previous times. They believed but life seemed pretty unkind to each of them in their own ways.
But there was one common thread among them all: They each had to accept that which was different to them and be regarded as a fool. That is what made their faith, FAITH. Likewise, we have to come to the place where we see when God is at work for ourselves, and if no one else believes it, we do. That is how real God must become to us. The difficulty is that in knowing Him a little, we assume we know God better than we really do. Perhaps you are seeking God, and someone, perhaps a person whom you greatly respect, has persuaded you to give up. Perhaps you have prayed about something, and because God didn’t answer you within a short time you gave up. Have you ever wondered what would have happened if you had held on???
The point Jesus makes in the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8) is to keep praying and not to give up. Wrestling in prayer isn’t all that much fun, and yes, many of us have given up too hastily, feeling God was not going to answer. But God graciously comes again. Friend, don’t let your life’s experiences deter you from chasing after the Lord. Remember, His grace is sufficient for you. This means He’s allowing you to have these experiences so that your faith in Him may be matured, developed and strengthened. Don’t give up on God – But seek God again with all your heart, keep chasing after Him…and you will find Him.
