Listening for that #StillSmallVoice –

are-you-listening

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice (1 Kings 19:11-12)~  It concerns us often to ask whether we are in our place, and in the way of our duty. Am I where I should be? Where is it that God calls me? Where does my business lie? Where I may be useful? We spend a lot of our lives going through motions…because we either believe that we are doing what we supposed to do or because we have determined by our own understanding that this is right ‘for us’. But the question is, ‘Am I doing what’s right per GOD’s will or my own; or am I just making a lot of noise and activity?’ There comes a point when God stands us in a place where we experience Him and He shows us what we are doing with our lives. We justify our own actions because we’ve come to think that all of the pomp and circumstance and grandeur are necessary and they elevate us and give us a sense of accomplishment. And because we feel great about our accomplishments we think that this is all part of God’s blessing and His calling. As good as we think we might be doing, we are met by revelation in Him that all we’re doing is stirring up a lot of activity and noise, and God is not found in any of it. In this revelation, God will quiet all of those things about us and cause them to pass by… and we begin to see that God is not involved in ALL of the noise we make. Yes, He does call us and He absolutely blesses us and we bear awesome fruits of these callings and blessings; but when He is found by us in the most quiet and intimate parts of our lives, the mild voice of Him who speaks from the cross, or the mercy-seat, is accompanied with peculiar power in taking possession of the heart. All of the things we do, what we have, who we’re with and our life’s experiences; are minuscule in comparison to the true presence of God in our lives. It’s now about all of those things that we have or what’s going on in our lives, It’s about knowing who HE is.  He wants us to know Him in our lives and He wants us to hear Him among all of the things that are going on in our lives; and we will only really get to know Him when we put ourselves and all of that ‘stuff’ aside and listen to that still small voice!

Give ear and hear my voice, Listen and hear my speech (Isa 28:23)
